I forgot to comment on this.

Fixing this in a way that preserves the current beef format would IMHO be a 
half-assed feature, because being actually able to save the volume is 
important. But I think it could be done, and getting rid of the greedy 
controller #7 would no doubt be good. So with your permission I could add 
per-channel volume adjustment functionality and widget for 0.5.2.
